As a self-designated member of the millennial ‘brunch club’, I have certainly had my fair share of smashed avocado, enough to scramble most of your minds. Whilst exploring the city, I’ve stumbled across a handful of brunch gems so good it would be a crime against brunch lovers not to share.
Hopefully even the sceptics and critics amongst you will find a this a helpful post to chase away any resting brunch faces. So, here’s a toast to brunch!
Brew and Brownie
Possibly one of my favourite cafes in York, Brew and Brownie seems the only naturally of my picks to start with, and where to start indeed! Located on Museum Street, Brew and Brownie is a work of art in itself. You will be guaranteed quality produce, from award-wining coffee to locally sourced ingredients, all served in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, where nothing appears too much trouble.

My personal fave of their delicious brunch menu is the American Pancakes with the berry compote. Who brew pancakes could taste so good?!

The increasingly popularity of Brew and Brownie does mean a wait for a table, especially at weekends or during school holidays, however you can be assured it is certainly worth the wait.

Burr
Another independent café, Burr offers brunch up until 12pm every day, perfect for those early risers or students hangry after their 9ams.
The quaint café offers not only a reasonably priced brunch menu, all served within a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, but also has an impressive range of hot beverages, including an extensive list of teas. What more could you want.

For those with a sweet-tooth, the vast choice of cakes and all things scrumptious is a further incentive to give this place a try.
The smashed avocado on sourdough is simply Burr-illiant.

Dyls
On the outskirts of the centre, Dyls for sure is a place to visit for the aesthetic-seekers amongst us. Situated within the Motor House on Skeldergate Bridge, this family-run, contemporary café/bar offers delicious food and beverages, perfect for any brunch date.
Catering for all your dietary needs, with vegan, gluten free and vegetarian options available, plus the opportunity to add additional extras to each meal, Dyls certainly is a must visit for a personalised and special treat.

Plus, the outdoor seating looking over the river Ouse or one of the four individually designed rooms only add to the uniqueness of the café. As such, Dyls is always a good visit for the gram.
Rae & Webb
Perhaps one of the lesser known spots in York, Rae & Webb is a hidden gem. Another independent café, located on Gillygate, which supplies a chilled-out atmosphere. The homemade goods combined with one of the best flat whites in York, makes Rae & Webb a great candidate for a brunch trip.
Despite being on the more limited side when it comes to the range of brunch dishes on offer, the café is a great place to rendezvous with friends or even provides a great place to do a spot of work.

Gulp & Graze
This café serves a host of natural, delicious foods, to eat in or take away. The pleasant ambience of the café makes this a perfect spot for a healthy brunch, making you appreciate the taste of freshly sourced produce.
Being located on Micklegate, by the time you’ve reached the café, you have certainly worked up an appetite. I’d 100% suggest the bagel with smashed avocado and halloumi, although all of the dishes sounded delish.

Furthermore, I’d recommend the homemade smoothies as a perfect detox, especially for students needing a hangover cure!

The Ivy
A brunch recommendation for wherever you are.
Even though The Ivy is not York specific, I couldn’t miss the chance to recommend its brunch. The exceptional service and quality of food means that whatever you order you will not be disappointed.

Particularly for a special occasion, or perhaps if you’ve got any of your student loan left, I’d suggest checking out their brunch offerings. Providing some additional dishes to the stereotypical brunch cuisine, this fine dining experience is one that any true brunch lover should try at some point.
